Accelerated by industrialization, this process has drawn millions of people from rural areas to cities due to educational opportunities, job prospects, healthcare services, and social amenities. Globally, as in Türkiye, this wave of migration has turned major cities into economic hubs while simultaneously pushing them to the brink of serious governance challenges. Today, the idea of returning to the countryside is no longer merely a nostalgic dream; it has emerged as a globally debated alternative lifestyle model. For many years, cities were synonymous with opportunity. However, population density, inadequate infrastructure, housing crises, traffic congestion, air pollution, and rising living costs have begun to reverse this perception. Urbanization is considered one of the most defining social transformations of the past two centuries.

A notable trend, accelerated by the pandemic, is that people are increasingly seeking not to abandon the opportunities of urban life but to avoid being completely constrained by them.

The Unmanageability of Big Cities

According to United Nations data, approximately 56% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas, and this proportion is expected to reach 68% by 2050. Yet this growth does not equate to sustainable urbanization. Megacities are becoming increasingly complex and fragile. In cities like Istanbul, London, New York, and Shanghai, housing costs have risen by 30–50% in real terms over the past five years, creating not only economic but also social pressures.

The core issue is that the pace of urbanization has outstripped cities’ capacity to renew themselves. Cities expand, but infrastructure, environmental resilience, and social cohesion cannot keep up.

Flight to the Countryside

Post-pandemic, the rural migration trend has become particularly pronounced among highly educated, digitally skilled groups. People seek three main things in rural life: lower living costs, connection to nature, and greater control over time. Remote work and widespread internet access have made this dream economically feasible for the first time.

However, the challenges are often underestimated. Rural life comes not only with romantic notions of escape but also with infrastructure deficits, limited healthcare access, educational constraints, social isolation, and seasonal risks. Many individuals pursuing agriculture or animal husbandry must revise their plans within the first two to three years, as nature demands discipline alongside freedom.

Technology and Rural Living

Here, technology plays a critical role. Smart farming applications, remote monitoring systems, small-scale renewable energy solutions, and modular construction technologies make rural life far more manageable than in the past. EU funding for rural digitalization in 2023–2024 demonstrates that governments are taking this transformation seriously.

In the U.S., “rural revitalization” initiatives aim to attract tech entrepreneurs to small towns. Conversely, China continues planned urbanization to prevent uncontrolled rural depopulation. In Europe, Germany and Scandinavian countries are pioneering hybrid models that encourage rural living.

Sustainability Perspective

Considering the planet’s finite resources, the current pace of urbanization is clearly unsustainable. Cities are less efficient than rural areas in per capita energy and water use. Well-planned rural settlements, however, offer significant advantages in local production, short supply chains, and low carbon footprints.

My personal view is clear: organic living aligns better with human nature. Advances in technology make building homes, small-scale farming, and animal husbandry far more accessible than before. In contrast, large cities continue to grow increasingly unmanageable.

Which Will Be More Valuable in the Future?

By 2050, the question will shift from “city or countryside” to which lifestyle model is more resilient. While major cities will not disappear, they risk becoming necessary rather than attractive spaces. Rural living, supported by proper infrastructure and technology, could emerge as a more valuable alternative in terms of personal fulfillment and planetary sustainability.

Ultimately, the decisive factor will not be where people live but how they live. In this equation, models that harmonize with nature, remain productive, and scale efficiently are likely to prevail

Wage Increases, Inflation, and the Endless Cycle of Dissatisfaction https://faruknafiz.com/en/wage-increases-inflation-and-the-endless-cycle-of-dissatisfaction/ Thu, 25 Dec 2025 14:10:09 +0000 https://faruknafiz.com/?p=753 New Year periods are almost everywhere a threshold where economic expectations are recalibrated. In Turkey, however, this threshold has long been interpreted through the lens of wage increases. Minimum wage hikes, civil servant salary adjustments, collective bargaining agreements, and white-collar pay raises bring together very different expectations among groups exposed to the same inflation. The resulting picture is usually familiar: if wage increases are low, dissatisfaction grows; if they are high, rising costs fuel inflation once again. At this point, I find myself thinking that the problem is not only “how much the raise is”, but rather the relationship between wage increases and the broader economy. When the link between income growth and price growth breaks down, everyone feels like they are constantly on the losing side. And in recent years, this has not been a problem unique to Turkey. The U.S. and Europe: Confronting Unfamiliar Inflation In the post-2021 period, the U.S. and Europe faced inflation rates they had not experienced in decades. While U.S. consumer inflation approached 9% in 2022, several Eurozone countries saw double-digit figures. For Western economies, this created a psychological rupture, as inflation had long been considered an “exceptional” phenomenon. In this new environment, wage increases accelerated and unions returned to the negotiating table with more aggressive demands. Yet the outcome was strikingly similar: higher wages raised costs, costs fed into prices, and a wage–inflation spiral emerged. In other words, a cycle Turkey has lived with for years became a global phenomenon, albeit at different scales. It is precisely here that Japan presents a striking contrast. Japan: Working in an Inflation-Free Economy Japan has experienced low inflation—and at times even deflation—for nearly 30 years. According to OECD and Bank of Japan data, average annual inflation between 1995 and 2020 remained in the 0–1% range. Real wages, meanwhile, have largely stagnated. At first glance, this may sound like “stability.” But this stability comes at a cost: weak consumer demand, limited domestic consumption, and constrained growth. Yet what is particularly interesting is this: Japanese employees do not live in a constant state of wage-increase expectations. Where Does Motivation Come From Without Raises? This is the question that made me pause the most. When there is no inflation, there is no constant expectation of raises. In Japan, employee motivation is shaped less by salary growth and more by job security, organizational loyalty, and social stability. Long-term employment, predictable living costs, and low price volatility make it easier for individuals to plan their future. Instead of asking, “How will I get through this month?”, people can focus on “Where will I be in ten years?” This may slow economic growth, but it also significantly reduces social stress. Of course, the Japanese model is far from perfect. Low consumption, an aging population, and limited appetite for innovation pose serious risks. Still, the idea of an inflation-free working life offers a valuable perspective for countries overwhelmed by endless wage debates. Lessons for Turkey Turkey neither can nor should pursue a long-term stagnation model like Japan’s. However, Japan has one undeniable strength: price stability. In my view, without bringing inflation down, it is impossible for wage discussions in Turkey to rest on healthy ground. The solution is not one-off, high wage hikes, but predictability. In an environment where inflation is permanently reduced, income growth is supported by productivity, and price expectations are anchored, wage increases stop being a crisis headline. In this sense, the Japanese model reminds us of something fundamental: what truly motivates people is not earning more every year, but preserving the value of what they earn. When economic stability is achieved in Turkey, wage increases will no longer be a source of dissatisfaction, but a normal management tool. Otherwise, even if the numbers change, the debate never will.

New Year and New Beginnings https://faruknafiz.com/en/new-year-new-beginnings/ Thu, 18 Dec 2025 11:46:25 +0000 https://faruknafiz.com/?p=729 As is well known, the New Year is not merely a symbolic threshold; it is a period that produces highly tangible outcomes in terms of the economy, business life, and individual expectations. New Year expectations go far beyond a simple change in the calendar; they represent a modern expression of humanity’s long-standing need to divide time into meaningful segments. The roots of this need are ancient, yet its effects today are more measurable than ever. In ancient societies, the New Year was closely tied to agricultural cycles and taxation calendars. In Mesopotamia, the Akitu Festival marked this transition, while in Rome the New Year coincided with the beginning of the fiscal and administrative cycle. Historically speaking, every new year has always been a moment of accounting and renewal. What has changed today is the scale of that accounting. The New Year and the Economy: What Do the Numbers Say? In the modern economy, the New Year and Christmas period represents a critical time window in which consumption intensifies. According to OECD and Eurostat data, approximately 25–30% of annual retail sales in developed economies take place in the final quarter of the year. In the United States, this figure reaches up to 35% in certain sectors. This is not only about individual spending; corporate inventory management, logistics planning, and cash flow strategies are also shaped around this period. Data from 2023–2024 show that consumer spending in the European Union is approximately 18% higher in the last quarter of the year. In China, by contrast, a similar concentration of economic activity shifts to the first quarter, aligned with the Lunar New Year. Different calendars, same reflex: cyclical concentration. These figures lead me to one conclusion: New Year opportunities are not an artificial expectation created by markets; they reflect a measurable pattern of economic behavior. When Did the New Year Culture Take Root in Corporate Life? In corporate life, the roots of the New Year reflex can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution. As mass production, budgeting, and performance management became widespread, the need for annual goal-setting emerged. From the mid-20th century onward, nearly all budget cycles in large corporations were structured around annual periods. Today, more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies use annual strategic planning and performance evaluation cycles. The reason for this is not a romantic idea of a “new beginning,” but practicality. Without defined periods, comparison becomes difficult. For this reason, the New Year in corporate life functions less as a motivational symbol and more as a governance tool. Why Do We Expect a New Beginning? This is where psychology enters the picture. Behavioral economics literature shows that people tend to make bolder decisions at time thresholds known as “temporal landmarks.” New Year’s Day, birthdays, or the start of a new job create a sense of mental reset. A behavioral economics study published in 2024 revealed that more than 60% of individuals revise their financial goals at the beginning of the year, while only 23% update them mid-year. This suggests that the New Year is not irrational; it is a cognitively powerful trigger. Opposing Views: Does the Calendar Change, or Behavior? Of course, this perspective has its critics. Those who argue that “life doesn’t change just because the calendar does” are not entirely wrong. There is a strong view that goals are meaningless without behavioral change. However, from my perspective, this underestimates the power of symbols. The calendar alone is not a solution, but it provides a framework for initiation. New Year opportunities do not promise miracles; they offer direction. When we miss this distinction, we either inflate expectations unrealistically or dismiss the entire concept as meaningless. The United States, China, and Europe: One Concept, Different Readings In the United States, the New Year is primarily interpreted through individual goals and consumption. From a financial markets perspective, the beginning of the year also signals a period of portfolio rebalancing. In China, the New Year effect is tied to the Lunar Calendar, resulting in a short but sharp slowdown in production and logistics. In Europe, Christmas and New Year are addressed together, with year-end accounting standing out alongside increased consumption. The common denominator across all three approaches is this: the New Year serves as a cultural mechanism for coping with uncertainty. As we move closer to 2026, the concept of New Year opportunities should be approached neither with exaggeration nor indifference. The New Year does not change everything, but it sets direction. The more consciously that direction is defined in the economy, business life, and individual decision-making, the more productive the year becomes. My hope for 2026 is a year in which more realistic goals are set, measurement and learning take precedence, and expectations are balanced with discipline. The New Year may not be magical—but when used wisely, it is powerful

Active Learning and Learning Strategies https://faruknafiz.com/en/active-learning-and-learning-strategies/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 12:58:09 +0000 https://faruknafiz.com/?p=558 In our previous article, we explained why “analytical thinking and innovation” are among the key skills of the future. This blog post deals with the topic of active learning and learning strategies, which according to the World Economic Forum is the second most important key skill of the future. Active learning is an approach in which learners are actively involved in the learning process and internalize knowledge through application. Learning strategies include methods that structure the acquisition and use of information. To better understand these concepts, it is helpful to consult the literature. In Michael Prince’s “Does Active Learning Work? A Review of the Research”, active learning is described as a method that increases learner engagement and interaction, while learning strategies are explained as techniques for achieving learning goals. Why are these skills so important? Active learning and effective learning strategies are of great importance in an age of rapid information change. The World Economic Forum emphasizes that continuous acquisition of knowledge and skills is necessary due to technological progress and digital transformation. There are several reasons for the increasing relevance of these skills. Firstly, the world of work has become more dynamic and complex. Active learning and effective learning strategies are essential to enable the workforce to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and market conditions. Secondly, the concept of lifelong learning is central to professional and personal development. In a world where knowledge is rapidly becoming obsolete, a one-off university degree or training is no longer enough. Therefore, the World Economic Forum considers these skills to be crucial for the workforce of the future. How can these skills be developed? There are several methods to promote active learning and effective learning strategies. One of the first methods is problem-based learning (PBL), where learners learn by working on real-world problems. In addition, cooperative learning, which focuses on group work, enables the acquisition of knowledge and skills. In self-directed learning, learners plan and control their learning process independently. Another model is the flipped classroom, in which traditional knowledge transfer takes place at home using video or reading material, while attendance time is used for practical exercises. Simulations and role plays also offer the opportunity to experience complex processes and interactions, which makes learning more effective. Of course, there are many other methods and practices. Regardless of the method, however, reinforcement through “repetition” is critical to skill development. Prominent examples There are many individuals and organizations that exemplify active learning and learning strategies. For example, Khan Academy, an educational platform, is known for its “flipped classroom” model. Founded by Sal Khan, the platform allows learners to learn at their own pace and creates more time for in-class activities. Another example is renowned universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which offers its students problem-based learning to develop their analytical and critical thinking skills. In addition, online education platforms such as Coursera and edX facilitate access to knowledge for millions of people by providing opportunities for self-directed and collaborative learning. In this article, we have explained what active learning and learning strategies are, why they have gained importance and how we can develop these skills. The World Economic Forum’s categorization of these skills as essential shows how important it is to continuously learn and adapt in our rapidly changing world. In the next part of our blog series, we will look at the ability to solve complex problems. Stay tuned!

In our previous article, we explained why “analytical thinking and innovation” are among the key skills of the future.

In line with its mission, it gathers and encourages leaders from different sectors and countries to work together to discuss important global issues and develop solutions. As a result of the studies it organizes under different headings, it shares with the public critical studies that it updates every year, and we can mention some of them as examples. Global Competitiveness Report: evaluates the economic competitiveness of countries. Global Risks Report: Analyzes global risks and gives advice on how to deal with them. Future of Jobs Report: Analyzes the changes in the labor market and the future demand for talent. Skills of the future The title “Top 10 Skills of 2025” in the World Economic Forum’s Five-Year Projection report, published in 2020, highlights the talents that will become important to succeed in the business world by 2025. These talents, grouped into four main categories, play a crucial role in the success of individuals and companies. In this blog series, we will discuss these skills one by one and show how we should equip ourselves for the future. Analytical thinking and innovation. What is it? Analytical thinking is the ability to solve complex problems in a logical and systematic way. Analyzing data, organizing information and drawing meaningful conclusions from that information are the fundamental elements of analytical thinking. In Peter Facione’s “Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Counts”, analytical thinking is defined as “a set of mental processes used to solve problems by collecting and analyzing data and drawing logical conclusions from it”. Innovation is the process of developing new ideas, products, services or processes to improve existing situations. This skill is a combination of creative thinking and problem-solving skills. In Clayton Christensen’s book “The Innovator’s Dilemma”, innovation is defined as “the process of converting creative ideas into economic or social value”. Why do you think they started with this title as their first skill? We can cite several reasons to understand why the World Economic Forum put “Analytical Thinking and Innovation” at the top of the list. The problems we face in today’s world are becoming increasingly complex. Large-scale problems such as global warming, pandemics and rapid technological change require people with analytical thinking skills. This skill consists of breaking down complex problems into their component parts to make them more manageable and find solutions. In addition, analytical thinking and innovation are essential to gain competitive advantage in the business world. Companies that analyze data effectively and develop innovative solutions can adapt more quickly to market conditions and stay ahead of their competitors. For example, Amazon has strengthened its leadership position in the industry by using big data analytics to predict customer preferences and personalize its services accordingly. How can we improve it? There are several strategies to develop analytical thinking and innovation skills. First, it is important to complete training and courses that focus on data analysis and problem-solving techniques. Online platforms offer a wide range of resources on this topic. For example, you can find numerous courses on data science and analytical thinking on platforms such as Coursera and edX. Secondly, it is also useful to engage in activities that encourage creativity. Activities such as brainstorming sessions, innovation workshops and creative writing can help you develop your innovative thinking. Such activities allow you to take on different perspectives and improve your ability to come up with creative solutions. After all, it is important to be inspired by successful examples. Tesla, for example, has revolutionized the automotive industry with its innovations in electric vehicle technology and the use of analytical thinking in the development of these vehicles. The continuous improvement of Google‘s search engine algorithms using data analytics is also a good example of how analytical thinking can make a difference in business. In the first part of this blog series, we briefly discussed the skill “Analytical thinking and innovation”. Analytical thinking requires a logical and systematic approach to solving complex problems, while innovation is the development of new ideas, products and processes. The combination of these two skills is the key to success in the future. In our future articles, we will analyze the other skills listed by the World Economic Forum. Stay tuned!

Future Work Models and the Impact of Artificial Intelligence https://faruknafiz.com/en/future-work-models-and-the-impact-of-artificial-intelligence/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 13:29:10 +0000 https://faruknafiz.com/?p=473 The rapid development and increasing capability of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving fundamental changes in the world of work. These changes are redefining working models and reducing future reliance on labor. In this blog post, we will look at how AI will shape future working conditions and how humans will retain their place in the workplace. The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on the World of Work Artificial intelligence, automation and robotics are increasing productivity and reducing costs in business. According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, it is estimated that 800 million jobs worldwide will be replaced by automation by 2030. This means that many jobs will be redefined and some jobs will disappear altogether. Reduced Human Dependency The increasing capability of artificial intelligence is reshaping the workforce by reducing human dependency. In particular, routine and repetitive tasks can be performed more efficiently by AI and robots. As a result, the role of humans in the workforce is shifting to more creative and strategic tasks . Jobs that will remain relevant in the future Although AI will take over many jobs, some professions will remain relevant. Craftsman jobs that require manual dexterity, creative arts, human relations and emotional intelligence are all areas that AI will not be able to fully take over. The value of such occupations is expected to increase. New Work Models and Employment Contracts In the future, working models and employment contracts will also change significantly. For example, it may be possible to work in more than one firm with open contracts. The ability for an employee to be insured in more than one firm at the same time offers flexible working hours and the ability to manage the workforce according to the needs of employers. This model can provide great flexibility to both workers and employers. The Role of States and Social Supports Changes in the workforce and the integration of AI into the world of work will also change the role of states. In the event of rising unemployment, states may need to provide for their citizens through social support payments. In addition, firms may be required to employ a certain percentage of people or pay additional taxes instead of employing human labor. These taxes can be transferred to social support funds. Innovative Business Models Innovative business models will also emerge with the integration of new working models and artificial intelligence. For example, a worker in production can become a profit and loss partner of the business by putting the humanoid robot he owns to work when he leaves his job. This reduces the investment costs of businesses, while enabling people who are laid off to earn an active income. The integration of AI into the business world will radically change working models and the workforce. As people shift to more creative and strategic roles, government social support systems and new business models will come into play. In the working world of the future, manual dexterity crafts, creative work and human relations will gain value. Adapting to these changes and restructuring the workforce is of great importance for both individuals and societies.
